Area
We provide biohazard decontamination services
for all of North Texas and Southern
Oklahoma.
Our
Purpose
Our objective here is to offer information
for anyone who might come into contact with someone needing
help
due to a traumatic experience or hazardous
event. Our services are
available not only because of risks in cleaning
these types of
conditions, but also because of the emotional anguish involved in
having to deal with the physical aspects of such circumstances.
Biohazard
Situations
We specialize in professional decontamination
and removals due to Suicides, homicides, Human and animal
decomposition, Automobile contamination, Gross filth
situations, Industrial accidents, Meth labs, and crime scene
investigation materials such as fingerprint dust and
luminal.
Health
Hazards
Our purpose is to properly decontaminate
scenes of potentially infectious materials so that no one will be
exposed
to a health hazard. Public awareness of
potential health hazards is a serious concern for us. Life threatening diseases
such as AIDS and
Hepatitis A-E and G can be transmitted through blood, bodily fluids
and tissue. Sometimes
we are dealing with victims
known to be AIDS-infected – but all scenes must be assumed to
be infected and proper precautions must be taken at all times. Airborne pathogens may also
be present which could be transmitted by breathing
contaminated
air.
Safety
of the Technicians
(OSHA – the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration has developed guidelines which determine how
contaminated situations should be handled by our technicians for
their safety.) When in situations
presenting serious health risks to our technicians, we wear
personal protective
equipment. (PPE) This
includes special protective suits, two pair of heavy duty gloves,
booties to protect our feet, face shields, respirators to prevent inhaling
contaminated particles, and also sweat bands.
Inside the suit it
becomes very hot and uncomfortable very quickly. As any of this protective
equipment becomes heavily contaminated, it must be removed and replaced
with clean gear. The
contaminated items are disposed in a biohazard “red
box.”
Disposal of Biohazard
Material
The presence of blood, bodily fluids, or
other potentially infectious (biohazard) materials on any
item or surface constitutes “contamination.” Such regulated waste must be
placed in special red bags then placed in special boxes which are
delivered to a special disposal
company for proper incineration. Bed linens, pillows, cut out
pieces of carpet and mattresses as well as all
recovered human tissue
are some of the usual “red boxed” items. For some jobs several red
boxes may be required.
Procedures
When we are dealing with blood or tissue on a
mattress or carpet, we cut out all the contaminated areas. At this scene we removed
areas on both sides of
the mattress. If there
is any blood or fluids on the box springs, we must remove that
too. Also, all
contaminated areas must be cut out of carpet and
padding. A small area
of blood on a carpet can be much larger on the padding and the sub
floor. Both wood and cement are very porous, so the
sub floor must be carefully treated, and sometimes also sealed. In one case the
contamination had seeped
into a crack in the concrete sub floor. We had to saw out the crack
to properly decontaminate, then seal the concrete. Usually, then, we haul off
the decontaminated bed and carpets to a landfill for
disposal.
If there is blood on walls, we must disinfect
those areas. If any
blood or tissue is on a textured ceiling we will cover the floor
with plastic and scrape all
the texture from the affected areas, then decontaminate. We may also need to paint a
sealer on some areas. We use indicator fluid, as well as a
special light to identify any further need for
treatment.
When a shotgun has been involved, blood and
tissue can be splattered down hallways and projected into several
rooms. This may
not be immediately
obvious, but our technicians are trained to search for all possible
contamination.
Everything that could possibly be affected must be checked. Sometimes this involves
hundreds of items. If a
knick knack cannot be decontaminated, it should be
discarded in a red
box.
Gross filth is a
situation where a person is living in an unsanitary situation. This might involve someone
with a mental or physical illness, or the elderly who are simply unable
to maintain clean living
conditions.
Biohazard
Clean-up
We strongly recommend that trained
professionals be used for such clean up. Families of victims and
janitorial services who are untrained may put themselves at risk as well
as others. A
contaminated scene should be cleaned as soon as possible. Biological
materials begin to break
down very quickly and release unpleasant
odors.
Factors
Determining Cost
We have several techs on call and we work
from this specially equipped truck where we maintain ample supplies
of everything we could possibly need. Our trailer is necessary for
hauling large items a client might want removed, like mattresses,
carpets and furniture which are
disposed in at a landfill or in a private dumpster. This is all part of our
normal overhead.
Additional primary factors in determining the
cost of a job are:
The time the job will
require and the number of
technicians
The distance and time
required to get to the job
And the number of red boxes
and amount of equipment that will be
necessary
Equipment
This is what we keep in our work truck. We have all of our personal
protective equipment as well as our hospital grade disinfectants
and odorcides. We have
our regular vacuum cleaner, also our HEPA vac, which stands for High
Efficiency Particulate Air.
Also we have several sizes of ladders for reaching high
places and ceilings…we also have our high-powered airless paint
sprayer which is used to decontaminate jail cells as well as
large areas of contamination using odorcides or hospital grade
disinfectant. These are
our red bags that are sealed
up and placed in red boxes.
Each red box cannot exceed 30 pounds. Several red boxes may be
needed for different jobs.
